Fatima Palliative care is medical wing of Canossa Medical Society which is a charitable, non-profit organization catering to medical, educational and social needs of the local poor, registered under Kerala Charitable Societies Action 16.03.1985. This charitable society is at Thumba-(Trivandrum Dist of Kerala in South India).
This society runs on the ideology of St. Magdalene of Cannosa. The Marchioness Magdalen of Canossa was born on 1 March 1774 in Verona, as she grew up, she saw her town as one in which the poor suffered and grew worse due to all the social upheavals. This situation provoked her desire to serve the needs of the unfortunate. Magdalen was a religious woman of extra ordinary integrity of character , exceptional capacity for taking decisions, undaunted courage, and unassailable faith. Magdalen of Canossa using her palatial inheritance began charitable work among the poor.
St. Magdalene of Cannosa together with her co-workers formed the congregation known as the Canossian daughters of Charity. Today the Canossian sisters continue to work on the dreams and aspiration of St. Magdalen of Canossa and contribute towards a better society. Fatima Palliative care Centre Thumba is guided by the same principle.
Palliative care is most appropriate when a patient no longer benefits from curative treatment and life expectancy is at stake. Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life for the chronically / terminally ill patients and their family members. The inmates at Fatima who face problems associated with life-threatening illness are taken care through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment. Also, treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual are dealt with at most care.
The elderly have the inherent right to a dignified life, to be free from abuse, neglect, exploitation & discrimination. The sole motivating philosophy at Fatima Palliative Care Centre is that of Social justice.
We believe that all homeless, abandoned, destitute elderly persons regardless of their poverty or lifestyle have the right to live a dignified life.
“ You Matter because you are you, you matter to the end of your life. We will do all we can not only to help you die peacefully, but also to LIVE until you die ”- Dame Cecily Saunders
